On the machine we eventually bought, the changeover is under 3 minutes. Product loss? Maybe 5 liters. The difference in annual product waste alone paid for the upgrade in 18 months.
So: ask for the exact changeover protocol, in writing. Ask how much product is lost per switch. If the salesperson hesitates, that's a red flag.
2. What's the actual fill accuracy on a 5 gallon filling machine?
The spec sheet always says ±1% or ±0.5%. That's the lab number. In a production environment, with varying product temperature and bottle quality, reality is different.
I once ordered a machine for 5 gallon (18.9L) water jugs—a 5 gallon filling machine setup. The spec said ±0.5%. In practice, we were getting ±1.5% on the first run. That was 283ml of variance per jug. On a pallet of 60 jugs, that's nearly 17 liters of product variance. Enough to cause QC rejections.
Ask for real-world test data. Better yet: ask for a reference customer who runs a similar product. Call them. Ask what their real accuracy is.
3. Can your machine handle my specific bottle neck finish? (Seriously, check this.)
This was true 5 years ago when we ordered our first soda bottle filling plant configuration. Today, most modern fillers have adjustable handling, but the myth persists that "it's all standardized."
Most buyers focus on volumetric output and completely miss the handling interface—the capping head, the fill nozzle geometry, the grip mechanism. The question everyone asks is "how many bottles per hour?" The question they should ask is "will it work with my 28mm PCO-1881 neck finish without modification?"
I learned this one the hard way on a small beer bottling machine. The filler worked fine. The crowner didn't match our Belgian-style bottles. Had to retrofit. Cost: $2,400 plus 2 weeks of delay.
4. How do you handle foam during carbonated fills?
This is the classic rookie mistake. Every beverage bottling machine for carbonated drinks will have some foam. The question is how the system manages it.
Like most beginners, I assumed the electronic controls would just figure it out. Learned that lesson when our first carbonated run produced 30% underfills because the foam was triggering the level sensor early.
Look for: a counter-pressure system with proper vent timing, a snorkel tube design that fills from the bottom, and actual tuning parameters for different carbonation levels. Not just a generic "CO2 fill" mode.

5. What's the real-world clean-in-place (CIP) cycle time and water usage?
The brochure says "CIP capable." What that means varies wildly. On a budget juice bottling machine, CIP might mean you manually disassemble the fill heads and soak them. On a better machine, it means a push-button cycle with automated rinsing, chemical wash, and final rinse.
I saved $3,000 by choosing a cheaper machine that claimed CIP. First month of operation, we spent 4 hours per day on manual cleaning. That's 88 hours of labor per month. Net savings: negative. A classic case of penny-wise, pound-foolish.
Ask for: the detailed CIP protocol. How many cycles? What temperature? What chemicals are recommended? What's the minimum water pressure needed? Get it in writing.
The automated process eliminated the data entry errors we used to have. Not great, not terrible. But the time savings alone was a game-changer.
6. What's included in the installation and commissioning support? (Be specific.)
Most buyers focus on per-unit pricing and completely miss installation support. Setup fees in this industry typically range from $200 to $800 per day for a technician. Some suppliers include 3 days on-site. Some include zero.
We bought a machine from a vendor who quoted "full installation included." Great price. What we didn't ask: does that include the technician's travel expenses? Does it include calibration of the first 500 bottles?
Bottom line: the "installation" amounted to the technician connecting the power and water lines. He didn't stay for the first production run. We were on our own. The first day was a disaster.
The checklist: who installs? How many days? What's included? What's extra? Get a written list. Not a salesman's promise.
7. What about spare parts availability and lead times?
Switching to a machine with a local spare parts distributor cut our downtime from 5 days to 2 hours. Sounds obvious. Most buyers don't check.
The machine will break. Not if, but when. It's a mechanical device with moving parts and fluid contact. Seals wear. Valves stick. Nozzles clog.
Ask: where is the nearest distributor? What's the average lead time for a fill nozzle? For a seal kit? For a control board? Is there a priority support option for critical failures?
If the supplier can't give a clear answer, that's a deal-breaker. You don't want to wait 6 weeks for a $15 O-ring that's keeping your production line down.
Bottom Line
Buying a beverage bottling machine isn't just about the specs. It's about asking the uncomfortable questions—the ones that reveal the real-world operational details. The machine that looks perfect on paper might be a nightmare in practice. Or the budget option might actually work for your simpler production.
