Don't buy a cheap laser just because your business is small. That advice sounds wrong to a buyer who is used to comparing prices. For most custom product shops, the first production laser should be CO2. Wood, acrylic, plastic, leather, paper, and many coatings absorb 10.6 µm CO2 laser light more predictably. That's why a machine like the Epilog Laser Helix 24x18 is still the core of our engraving operation.
Should you skip CO2 because fiber is the future? No. Advanced is not the same as appropriate. Buy the machine that solves the jobs you have today, then add capability when customer demand proves it.
What about the buyer who says I can buy three cheap lasers for one Epilog?
I hear that challenge from cost-focused buyers all the time. My honest answer: buy three if your business can survive three service failures at once.
