Epilog Laser Cutter Price, 80W CO2, Deep Engraving, and Eye-Safe Fiber: A Buyer's FAQ

I'm the office administrator for a 35-person sign and fabrication shop. Since 2020, I've handled equipment purchasing—roughly $400,000 a year across tooling, materials, and service vendors. When our operations team asked for a laser, I basically had to teach myself the difference between CO2 and fiber. This FAQ is the version I wish I'd had back then.

What is the actual Epilog laser cutter price range?

From the itemized quotes I've collected since 2023, the range is wider than most people think. A new Epilog Zing 24 system can be around $8,000. A Fusion Pro with an 80W CO2 laser and rotary attachment is more like $25,000 or more. The Epilog FiberMark systems we priced landed between $20,000 and $35,000, depending on the work area and options. (Which, honestly, is a huge range—that's why you need a real quote.)

I want to say those figures are still close as of March 2025, but don't quote me on the exact current list price. The good part: Epilog list prices are published. The tricky part: accessories are where the quote goes up. The base machine and the machine you actually install can be different numbers. When comparing, ask for a line-item quote with chiller, exhaust, rotary, and software training included.

If you're looking at used Epilogs, price is a different animal. The only advice I'll give there is to ask for the laser hour count, the tube replacement history, and the service records before you make an offer.

What is a deep CO2 laser, and how deep can it go?

There's no separate product called a "deep CO2 laser." It's a CO2 laser doing deep engraving or through-cutting. Depth comes from slowing the speed, adjusting focal position, and running multiple passes. On our 80W system, a deep acrylic engrave is usually three to five passes at lower speed, while a surface mark is one pass at high speed.

What most people don't realize is that depth depends just as much on air assist and the lens focal length as it does on wattage. A 40W laser can do a decent deep mark if the setup is right. An 80W laser can do it faster—that's the real advantage.

One more thing: for engraved graphics, I treat commercial print's 300 DPI standard as the minimum baseline. Running 300 DPI gets crisp edges; 600 DPI gives finer curves but a slower job. For deep cuts, DPI matters less than speed and number of passes.

What is an eye-safe fiber laser?

Not every fiber laser is eye-safe, and the term has a specific technical meaning. In industry terms, wavelengths above roughly 1400 nm—like 1550 nm—are commonly described as "eye-safe" because they don't focus on the retina the way shorter infrared wavelengths do. That doesn't mean they're harmless at high power; it means the eye-safety analysis is different.

A material-processing fiber laser at 1064 nm does not meet that definition. It can be focused on the retina, so it's a Class 4 laser. If you search for an "eye-safe fiber laser" for marking, check the exact wavelength and laser class before you buy. If a supplier can't tell you whether it's 1064 nm or 1550 nm, that's a compliance red flag.

Budget for laser safety glasses and an interlocked enclosure. Skipping that because "it's fiber, so it's safe" is the kind of shortcut that ends up in an incident report.

Is an 80W laser cutting machine worth it?

For our workflow, yes. We chose the 80W CO2 option because we cut 10mm acrylic and 6mm plywood on a regular basis. A 40W laser can handle those materials too, but with more passes and longer cycle times. The 80W machine turned a 15-minute acrylic cut into roughly 6 minutes. Over a month, that's extra capacity without adding labor.

Then again, if your shop only engraves small gift items or thin sheets, 40W might be enough. Spend the savings on a rotary attachment or better ventilation. The right power depends on your actual jobs, not the biggest number on the spec sheet.

Bottom line: an 80W laser cutting machine is an efficiency upgrade, not a magic bullet. It makes existing jobs faster. It doesn't replace a fiber marker for metal marking.

What Epilog laser news should a buyer track?

I ignore most "laser news" pages that don't cite a source. What I actually track: Epilog's official software release notes, materials profile updates, accessory compatibility notices, and dealer service bulletins. Those tell me when a firmware fix affects our work, when a new lens option becomes available, or when a safety notice changes our procedures.

(Should mention: I once found out about a rotary attachment compatibility update through a vendor rep before our dealer mentioned it. After that, I started checking the support page before every major upgrade—and I confirmed directly with Epilog support before ordering.)

For a buyer, Epilog laser news is mostly about maintenance and compatibility, not product launch hype. If an article doesn't link to the official release notes, I basically skip it.

What does a laser quote not include?

Here's something vendors won't tell you on the first call: the quote is never the final price. You will almost certainly need exhaust or an extraction system, a chiller or air-cooling setup, air assist, laser safety glasses, and maybe a dedicated electrical circuit. The first quote is the beginning, not the end.

This is where I learned the hard way. I knew we should check power and ventilation before the 80W unit arrived, but thought, "what are the odds the dealer will forget to mention it?" The odds caught up with me. Our install bay only had standard 110V outlets, and the laser specified a 240V circuit. That mistake cost us $1,800 in electrical work and delayed the project by two days.

I also learned the budget chiller lesson. We saved about $900 on a generic cooler instead of the OEM package. That decision looked smart until the tube overheated during a long summer run. We ended up paying $2,100 for a replacement laser tube plus the original OEM chiller. Net loss: $1,200 and a week of downtime. Oh, and the OEM chiller is now in our standard purchase spec.

The most frustrating part? The dealer had included the exhaust requirements in the paperwork. You'd think a purchaser would catch that before installation, but I was so focused on price that I skimmed the wrong page.

Can a laser cut match a Pantone color?

This is the question most first-time buyers don't think to ask. A CO2 laser doesn't print color; it removes material or changes the surface color. If you need a brand-specific color on a panel, the usual workflow is to paint or print the panel first using a Pantone-matched process, then laser engrave or cut it.

For printed overlays that we engrave afterward, our print vendor checks color tolerance to Delta E under 2 for brand-critical colors—that's the Pantone matching standard. The laser is the cutter, not the printer. It's worth planning the whole process before you choose the machine, because the laser's job starts after the color is already there.
