- Fusion Pro systems: $20,000–$55,000+, depending on wattage and bed size

A CO2 laser—like Epilog's Fusion series—handles wood, acrylic, leather, glass, and coated metals. A fiber laser marks bare metal and cuts thin sheet metal. Neither is the absolute winner. People insist they need a fiber laser 3000W because the number sounds serious. A 3000W fiber is a three-phase, room-sized sheet metal cutter. If you run a sign shop or a small fabrication studio, that's not an upgrade—it's a building project.
One side note: people searching “CO2 laser arms” are usually thinking of the articulated beam-delivery arms on large industrial CO2 systems. Epilog machines don't use those. The beam stays enclosed; the gantry moves the laser head. If you specifically need an articulating arm, you're shopping for a different category of equipment entirely.
5. Can I use an Epilog for gemstone cutting?
If you're searching for a “gemstone laser cutting machine,” here's the reality: a CO2 laser can engrave certain stones, but cutting them is a different story—or rather, a different machine.
We tested a Fusion Pro on gemstone samples in early 2024. Beautiful frosted marks on some stones. Cracks on others. Natural stones contain inclusions and variable moisture; the thermal shock of a laser can split them. Slow passes and lower power help, but there's always a failure rate.
People assume a laser cutting machine handles gemstones like a hot knife through butter. It doesn't. If you want to facet or separate stones, you need lapidary equipment. If you want to engrave a stone surface, an Epilog can do it—provided you test with the actual material you'll be running. 6. Is a used Epilog worth it?

A colleague bought a used Zing in mid-2024 at what looked like a fair price. The seller didn't disclose the tube hours. Six months later, the tube died. Replacement plus installation: roughly $3,100. He now owns a machine that cost more than a new entry-level system with a warranty.
Ask for tube hours. Ask for service history. Ask whether the warranty actually transfers. If the seller says “trust me,” ask them to walk through the maintenance log instead. Actions beat assurances.
7. What do you wish you'd known before buying?
Three things.
First, get the biggest bed you can afford. I bought the smaller version to save money and paid for it in rework for two years. The upgrade would've been cheaper. Period.
Second, budget 10–15% over the base price for infrastructure. Chiller, fume extraction, air supply. Our own setup in Q3 2024 cost $2,160—and I thought I'd planned for everything.
Third, choose the dealer as carefully as the machine. I signed with the lowest quote once; delivery slid by three weeks—or rather, three weeks plus two days of panic. The dealer network matters when something breaks at week fourteen.
