How to Buy Your First Epilog Laser Without Wasting Money (A 5-Step Checklist)

I've been running a small custom-manufacturing side hustle for about six years now. In that time I've personally made seven major equipment-buying mistakes—totaling roughly $12,000 in wasted budget (ugh). The worst was probably the $2,800 Chinese fiber laser I bought in 2022 that died after 90 days. But I also overpaid for a used Epilog because I didn't check the tube hours.

After all that, I put together a checklist for myself—and now my friends ask for it when they're shopping for their first laser engraver. If you're a small shop, a school, or just a serious hobbyist looking at Epilog lasers (or honestly any CO2/flatbed system), this list will keep you from repeating my stupid mistakes.

I'll walk through 5 steps. Skip one, and you might end up like me—staring at a broken machine with no support.

Step 1: Know Your Material Before You Know the Price

It's tempting to jump straight to "how much does an Epilog laser cost?" But the first question should be: what are you cutting or engraving? Most people I've talked to start with wood and acrylic. That's perfect for a CO2 laser like the Epilog Fusion or Mini. But if your main material is metal (for marking serial numbers or logos), you need a fiber laser—and Epilog doesn't make those. So you'd be looking at something like an Acmer fiber laser or a supplied all-in-one UV marking machine.

(I learned this the hard way when I bought a used Epilog thinking I could mark steel tools. Totally wrong wavelength.)

Checkpoint: List your top 3 materials before you search for prices. Write them down. If they include metals, you need fiber, not CO2.

Step 2: Don't Compare Price Alone—Compare Total Cost

It's easy to think "oh, this Epilog is $3,000 more than that Acmer fiber laser." But that's an oversimplification (and a mistake I made twice). The purchase price is just the start.

Consider:

  • Support and parts availability – Epilog has a dealer network in the US, so if your tube dies, you can get a replacement in days. With a no-name flatbed CO2, you might wait weeks (or need to ship back to China).
  • Secondhand value – Epilogs hold their price. I bought a used Epilog Mini in 2020 for $4,200, used it for 18 months, and sold it for $3,800. Try that with a budget laser.
  • Hidden extras – Exhaust system, chiller, air assist, rotary attachments—look at the total cost of ownership, not just the sticker price (unfortunately, I forgot to budget $600 for exhaust).

In my experience, a new Epilog Fusion Pro costs about $12,000–$20,000, while a used Epilog laser Mini might be $4,000–$6,000 (based on eBay and dealer quotes I checked in January 2025—verify current pricing). A cheap flatbed CO2 from a Chinese brand can be $2,000–$4,000, but you'll pay for it in frustration.

Step 3: Verify the Laser's History (If Buying Used)

I still kick myself for not checking the tube hours before buying that used Epilog. The seller said "lightly used." I didn't ask for a counter reading. Turns out the tube had 3,200 hours—nearing end of life. A new tube costs $1,200–$1,800. That mistake added $1,800 to my "bargain."

Ask for:

  • Total laser hours (most Epilogs display this in the menu)
  • Whether the tube has been replaced—if yes, when and with what brand?
  • Photos of the interior (look for dust, scorch marks, or signs of poor maintenance)
  • If possible, test it with a simple engrave at your material

I don't have hard data on how many used Epilogs are sold with failing tubes, but based on my circle of shop owners, I'd guess it's about 15%—so this step is way more important than people think.

Step 4: Match the Format to Your Workflow

Epilog's lineup includes bed sizes from 12" x 24" (Zing) up to 36" x 48" (Fusion Pro). Most people I know who started with a small Mini regretted it within a year because they couldn't process larger stock. I'm in that camp: my first laser was a 16" x 12" model, and after six months I was turning down jobs that needed a 24" x 18" workspace.

If you engrave mugs or small parts all day, a mini is fine. But if you plan to cut large sheets of acrylic or wood, go for at least the Fusion 24x36. A flatbed CO2 laser with a 48x36 table is even better for production—but then you're looking at a different price tier.

Checkpoint: Measure your largest potential workpiece. Add 4 inches to each dimension. That's the minimum bed size you need.

Step 5: Don't Let the Supplier Treat You Like a Small Fry

This is the one that grinds my gears. When I was starting, some dealers would blow me off because I was a one-man shop with a $5,000 budget. They'd give me vague answers, no demos, no follow-ups. But Epilog's official distributors (and many of their resellers) actually treat small orders seriously. I've had great experiences with a few dealers who took time to explain the difference between the Helix and Fusion, even though my order was small.

If a supplier treats you like a nuisance, walk away. A good vendor knows today's $200 request can become next year's $20,000 order. I get why some companies have minimum order sizes—that's fair. But good support shouldn't depend on order size.

(This worked for me, but your mileage may vary if you're outside the US. I can only speak to domestic operations—international buyers might face different dynamics.)

  • Warranty and registration – Epilog lasers come with a 2-year warranty on new units. Used ones have no warranty unless you buy from a certified dealer. Ask.
  • Software compatibility – Epilog uses its own print driver that works with Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW. Make sure your design software plays nice.
  • Shipping and setup – These machines are heavy (100–400 lbs). Factor in freight and liftgate costs—about $200–$500.
  • Regulation note – Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), any claim like "Made in USA" must be backed up. Epilog is genuinely American-made, so that's legit. But be wary of vendors who say "American quality" for a Chinese flatbed reassembled here.
  • Post office stuff – If you'll ship small engraved items, USPS defines a large envelope as max 12" x 15" (source: usps.com). Anything bigger is a package and costs more. Plan your product sizes accordingly.

I still don't have hard data on overall satisfaction rates across all laser brands—just my own painful anecdotes. But I can tell you that after three machines and five years, I'm finally profitable with a used Epilog Fusion. Hopefully this checklist saves you the first few years of mistakes (and the $12,000).
