Line Array vs. Point Source: Which Speaker System Actually Saves You Money?

Let me start with a confession: I used to think line arrays were always the answer.

Big venue? Line array. Loud music? Line array. Want to look professional? Line array. Everything I'd read said it was the gold standard—until I started actually tracking the real costs.

Here's the thing: there is no universal "best" between a line array speaker and a point source speaker. It depends entirely on your space, your audience, and your budget.   • If your venues are mixed but mostly small: buy a point source system, rent a line array for the big shows

And don't forget the hidden costs: storage, transport, setup time, and tuning expertise. A system that costs $15,000 but requires $3,000/year in extra labor is actually an $18,000 decision.

Honestly, the biggest lesson I've learned after 6 years of tracking every invoice: there's no prestige in owning a line array if it doesn't fit your work. The smartest move is to match the tool to the job, not the job to the tool.
