The Truth About Buying an Epilog Laser in a Rush: Why New Beats Used When Time Isn't on Your Side

If you need a laser in 48 hours, buy new. Not used.

Here's the short version: When the deadline is fixed, a new Epilog Zing 16 with rush shipping is almost always the safer call than a 'like new' one from Craigslist northeast.

I learned this the hard way. In March 2024, I needed a CO2 laser for a manufacturing expo. Normal lead time was 3 weeks. I had 5 days. My first instinct was to hunt for a used Epilog on Craigslist. Made sense, right? Save a few thousand, pick it up locally, be the hero.

Spoiler: I was not the hero. That experience—and 40+ rush orders since—changed how I think about urgency.

Why I stopped recommending used for emergencies

I’d read all the forums. The conventional wisdom is that Epilogs are tanks. They last forever. A well-maintained used one is a steal. And that’s true… if you have time to inspect, test, and fix it. In an emergency, you don’t have that luxury.

The exact timeline, if I remember correctly, went like this:

  • Sunday 3pm: Found an Epilog Zing 16 in Massachusetts. Seller said “barely used.”
  • Monday 10am: Drove 2 hours. Machine wouldn’t fire the laser. Tube was dead. Seller offered $200 off.
  • Monday 6pm: Back home. No machine. No time to find another used one.

  • Tube life: A CO2 tube on a used Epilog Zing 16 might have 2 years left. Or 2 weeks. No warranty.
  • Parts availability: Need a Zing 16 part for that Northeast model? Even Epilog parts take time to ship if you don’t have a dealer nearby.

When used makes sense (and when it doesn't)

Let me be fair. I know plenty of people who bought a used Epilog laser off Craigslist and it ran great for 5 years. Doesn’t change the math for urgent buyers.

Used is right when:

  • You have 2+ weeks of buffer before you need production.
  • You can physically inspect the machine with someone who knows lasers.
  • Budget is your only constraint—and you can wait for a replacement if it breaks.

  • The deadline is hard. A conference. A trade show. A client contract.

That’s not marketing. That’s a lesson I paid $1,200 to learn.

That said—if you’re a hobbyist with a flexible timeline and a steady hand for repairs? Go ahead, make a deal on that Zing 16 Northeast unit. Just don’t bet a deadline on it.
