Why Your Epilog Laser Settings Matter More Than You Think (Especially for Ceramic & Superalloy)

I Believe the Most Overlooked Setting on an Epilog Laser Is Frequency

After four years of reviewing jobs before they ship—roughly 200 orders per month—I've rejected about 8% of first deliveries this year. The culprit? Almost never power or speed. It's the frequency setting. Get it wrong on ceramic or superalloy, and you're looking at cracked edges or burnt surfaces. Get it right, and suddenly your parts look like they came from a production house, not a prototype shop.

The Moment It Clicked

Last fall, we were running a batch of ceramic coasters with an Epilog Fusion Pro. Same power, same speed—only the frequency changed. Side by side, the difference was stunning:

  • At 20 kHz: clean, deep mark, no micro-cracks.
  • At 50 kHz: faint, uneven engraving, and tiny hairline fractures.

Seeing that A/B comparison made me realize why we'd been struggling. We'd never bothered to dial in frequency per material. That single change pushed our yield from 70% to 95% on ceramic jobs.

The Process Gap That Cost Us Time (and Money)

Here's the embarrassing part: for the first two years, we didn't have a formal frequency table. Every time we switched from acrylic to ceramic to stainless steel, we'd guess. The third time we ruined a $4,000 batch of ceramic prototypes, I finally created a settings reference sheet. Should have done it after the first incident.

Now we log every successful run: material, thickness, power, speed, frequency, and notes. That one page of data saved us roughly 30% in setup time and eliminated most of those costly redo's.

CO₂ vs. Fiber – A Real Struggle

I went back and forth between recommending CO₂ and fiber for superalloy component welding for weeks. CO₂ is great for organics—wood, acrylic, leather. But for superalloy? Fiber laser is the right call. And yet, even with fiber, frequency is critical. Too high and you get porosity; too low and the weld lacks penetration. Our Epilog fiber system (the one we use for custom metal parts) needs frequency around 30–40 kHz for typical superalloys. Not all machines behave the same, so test your own.

But Isn't It Just a 'Set and Forget' Machine?

Some operators think a high-end laser like Epilog should just work with default settings. I understand the temptation—it's a solid machine. But in our Q1 2024 audit, we found that 12% of first-run parts failed inspection because of incorrect frequency (compared to only 3% for power/speed issues). The default frequency on many profiles is optimized for generic materials, not specialty ones like ceramic or superalloy.

That frequency blunder cost us a $22,000 redo on a superalloy welding project last year. The customer had a tight deadline, and we had to expedite the second run at our cost. Not something I want to repeat.

The Bottom Line

If you're running an Epilog laser in Issaquah or anywhere else, stop treating frequency as a secondary parameter. For ceramic, aim low (15–25 kHz). For superalloy welding, start at 30 kHz and adjust. And if someone tells you "just use the factory settings"—question it. The best Epilog laser settings are the ones you've tested yourself.

I'm not saying Epilog machines are weak—they're not. But they reward attention to detail. That's the reason we keep buying them.
