Who This Checklist Is For
If you are comparing an Epilog Laser system, checking the used Epilog Laser Mini price, or weighing a fiber laser cabinet against a handheld laser welding machine for stainless steel, this is the checklist I wish someone had given me.
I have handled laser system orders for 11 years. I have also made 14 significant equipment decisions I regret - roughly $28,000 in wasted budget, if I count the first failure correctly. This is not a 'top five lasers' article. It's the checklist I now use before every laser purchase, and I keep it in our shop binder.
The trigger event came in March 2023. A tube failed on a job with a fixed delivery date. We had no spare, no backup plan, and the dealer's next truck was five days out. That one week changed how I think about every machine we buy.
Use this in the order below. It works for a small shop and for a bigger production floor.
Step 1: Define the Job Before You Define the Machine
Most laser buying mistakes start with the wrong question. People ask 'Which laser?' before they ask what material, what thickness, how many pieces per week, and what does good look like. Those answers determine everything else.
I see the 'Epilog Laser Fusion M2' question a lot. It's a dual-source system, which is attractive if you need both CO2 and fiber capability in one footprint. But dual-source also means more components, more calibration, and more potential failure points. That isn't a reason to avoid it. It's a reason to confirm your job actually needs both sources before you pay for them.
Step 2: Verify Material Test Results on Your Own Samples
Spec sheets do not engrave. Samples do.
I assumed 'same specifications' meant identical results from one vendor to another. Didn't verify. Turned out each vendor interpreted 'maximum speed' differently. The sample that looked fine in the showroom did not run at the same speed when we tested with our actual material.
If you want color marking, pay particular attention here. Fiber laser color on stainless steel is real, but it is not like printing with an inkjet. The color comes from a thin oxide layer, and it changes with focal position, power, speed, and material finish. Expect gold, blue, purple, and grey tones. Do not promise a customer a specific Pantone color without testing it first.
Step 3: Open the Laser Cabinet and Ask Questions
When someone says 'fiber laser cabinet,' I do not think 'brand.' I think 'containment.' The cabinet is your safety boundary. It is where the beam path lives, where the interlocks are, and where your fume extraction starts.
Open the service panels. Check:
- Interlock placement and how many there are.
- Beam path covers and whether they actually block stray reflections.
- Exhaust port size and static pressure rating, not just flange diameter.
- Access to optics for cleaning.
A cabinet that is difficult to clean is a cabinet that won't stay aligned for long.
Step 4: Separate 'Impressive' from 'Productive'
Handheld laser welding machine for stainless steel is a category I see people add to their mental shopping cart while they're still looking for a marking laser. It's easy to understand why. The videos look powerful, and the weld beads look clean.
But a handheld laser welder is not an accessory. It needs shielding gas, a water chiller, training, a clean environment, and a decent operator. The machine itself is only part of the setup. I'm not 100% sure of current pricing in every region, but I am 100% sure the 'accessories' line item will be bigger than you expect.
If your workshop does stainless steel fabrication and you also need a marking laser, plan them as separate purchases with separate budgets.
Step 5: Check Support and Parts Before You Check Price
An Epilog Laser Mini price is probably what you typed into Google. Fine. But ask the dealer about tube life, shipping time for a replacement tube, lens availability, and whether the motion controller is still supported.
Why does this matter? Because the lowest used Epilog Laser Mini price can turn into a $2,000 repair in the first year. And if you are buying used, the supporting cast matters more than the serial number: tube condition, current firmware, original accessories, and whether the seller can show you service history.
As of March 2025, I still see used Epilog Laser Mini systems at very different price points. Some are fair; some are someone else's repair bill.
Epilog builds in the U.S., and their dealer network is mature. That is an advantage when you need a part—not a promise that you will never need one.
Take this with a grain of salt: I don't trust 'it was working before we stored it' without seeing the machine in the shop. Simple.
Step 6: Budget the Installation, Not Just the Machine
Every laser purchase includes a hidden line: getting the machine into your space and running. Electrical requirements, compressed air, ventilation, a dedicated room if the cabinet is loud, chiller water if it's a fiber laser, and rigging if the machine is too heavy for a hand truck.
This is where a 'cheap' system stops being cheap. It is also where a lot of small workshops get hurt. My first mistake in 2017 was not about the brand. It was about ignoring the crate, the exhaust duct, and the electrician. That added about $1,400 to a job that was already budgeted tightly.
Step 7: Ask for a Production-Scale Sample Run
A one-piece sample is good. A production-scale run is better. If the dealer can't or won't let you run 20 identical parts with your material, then you do not know what the machine will do on piece 17 out of 500. I learned this the expensive way on a $3,200 order that looked fine in photos and failed on the third repeat. The lesson: check repeatability, not just the first piece.
Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov), claims need to be truthful and substantiated. If a dealer says 'zero maintenance' or 'never needs a replacement,' ask for the written warranty and the maintenance schedule. Real laser systems have consumables. Anyone who says otherwise is selling confidence, not equipment.

After the Checklist: Notes from the Repair Log
Color marking is a process, not a button
Fiber laser color on stainless steel and titanium is a useful feature, but it drifts with ambient conditions and material batch. If you sell color marking services, keep a color card made on the same material at the same settings. Use that card as the agreed reference.
Small orders deserve serious attention
When I was starting out, the vendors who treated my small inquiry seriously are the ones who got my larger order later. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means potential. If your first order with a laser supplier is $200, and they still answer your technical questions, that is a strong signal about their long-term support.
Mistakes I still see
- Ordering maximum power without checking whether the material can be marked at high power without burning.
- Buying a dual-source system when one source will cover the next two years of jobs.
- Ignoring the cabinet until installation day.
- Trusting a demo video over a test with your own material.
