That $400 did not buy speed alone; it bought certainty. The repair schedule was written into the work order, and we did not have to cross our fingers.

I have been burned twice by probably-on-time promises. Probably is not a schedule. When I spec equipment or service, I ask for a written completion date. That said, the word CO2 creates real confusion. A medical CO2 laser and a production CO2 laser both use a 10.6 µm wavelength, but the power, delivery system, and purpose are different. An Epilog CO2 laser is not for skin. And if someone says IPL laser, that is technically not even a laser — IPL is intense pulsed light. It performs a different job entirely.

For a production shop, the useful comparison is CO2 for non-metals versus fiber for metals. A 10W fiber will not give you the large engraving area you would want for a wood sign. A CO2 will not leave a clean mark on bare stainless unless you use a marking spray. Pick the tool for the material, not the buzzword.

7. What should a first-time buyer check before buying an Epilog laser?

From a quality-control standpoint, I check four things:

  • Support: who do you call if the laser source fails? Is that person in your time zone?
